A FAMILY STORY: For the Milazzo family, producing wines is a true "family affair", making them the first producers of sparkling wines using the classic method in Sicily. A journey that continues under the sign of enhancing the company’s tradition, with Giuseppina Milazzo and Saverio Lo Leggio, a couple in life, united in the will to continue the Milazzo production. Among the first Sicilian winegrowers, between the late seventies and the early eighties, to enhance winemaking from native Sicilian varieties. This has allowed, over the years, along with other excellent names, the recovery of the island's wine tradition, without neglecting experimentation and innovation, which has led, among others, to the adoption in Sicily of Chardonnay grapes, with the precise intention of producing a great Sicilian Classic Method sparkling wine. A SUSTAINABLE COMPANY: ISO and Organic certifications. Being a sustainable company means accepting the challenge of continuous change, working well today to produce better tomorrow. Currently, the company is also engaged in a program for analyzing the carbon footprint throughout the production chain. We thus want to guarantee the quality of our work through a path that effectively combines low environmental impact cultivation techniques and innovation in the various stages of production of our wines and classic method sparkling wines. Our Steps Towards SUSTAINABILITY - Early '900: Maria Costanza – family ancestor - a strong-willed woman, personally dedicated to grape cultivation and winemaking; she oversaw all stages of processing. A small winery in Campobello di Licata, but even then the wine produced was very much appreciated by local clientele. In the post-war years, the production of wine grapes was accompanied by that of table grapes. By the end of the sixties, new vineyards for wine grape production replaced those of table grapes, thus starting a new phase in the family story. The Azienda Agricola G. Milazzo was born, not simply to make wine and become a profitable business, but above all to be a company dedicated to the obsessive search for quality and continuous improvement. 1982: registration of the brand “Martin Pescatore”, already used in the post-war years and until the early sixties for the marketing of table grapes in international markets. 2004: first certification: UNI ENI ISO 14001 for the activation of the Environmental Management System. 2007: the long-standing choice not to use synthetic chemical substances begins to be certified. This year begins the mandatory conversion period, which will lead to the organic product certification, completed in 2012. 2008: certification UNI EN ISO 9001 for the Quality Management System and UNI EN ISO 22005 for the Traceability of the production chain, which starts from fertilizations, to pruning and all work in the vineyards, to the production of wines in the winery, up to deliveries to customers. 2012: Organic certification, which represented the achievement and at the same time the new starting point of our production path, opening up new challenges. Our Martin Pescatore brand is complemented by the European organic brand. A journey that began in 2007 and concluded in 2012, with the obtaining of the definitive certificate (Certificate n. 2500/I rev. 02). A commitment that concerns not only our 75 hectares of vineyards but the entire Milazzo property, which today counts about 110 hectares overall. Every single parcel of the company, even if not planted with vines, is already certified or in the phase of “conversion” to ORGANIC CERTIFICATION, a fundamental choice. The only one that allows us to continue planting vineyards in respect of our motto: We guarantee the genuineness of our wines. 2013: a new challenge begins, that of reducing CO2 emissions (carbon) at every stage of production (from the field to the consumer). We thus decide to adhere to the Ita.Ca. protocol for the development of a tool to calculate the carbon footprint, an international “calculator”, already used in Italy, Australia, California, and New Zealand, specifically adapted to the Italian production model of vine and wine, by researchers and technicians from the SATA group and the University of Milan, in collaboration with Australian colleagues. 2013: participation in the call issued by the Ministry of the Environment for the analysis of the carbon footprint in mass consumption products. Another milestone completed. Today we are among the 95 Italian companies from different production sectors, and the only Sicilian wine company, admitted to the program. 2014: doing business while consuming and polluting less represents a complex challenge both scientifically and organizationally. But we are, first and foremost, men and women of the land and we are convinced that we have only one choice: to protect the environment so it can continue to give us healthy and good fruits. Within the Ministry's project, we are now engaged in obtaining ISO/TS 14067 Product carbon footprint certification (Certification system for the methodology for quantifying the product carbon footprint), which will validate the method by which we are collecting and analyzing data on our CO2 emissions, to identify the best technical solutions for effectively reducing our “Carbon footprint”.
