Koeksisters are delicious South African pastries made from fried dough dipped in a sweet and sticky syrup. They are perfect to enjoy with a cup of tea or coffee and are traditionally prepared during special events and holidays.
In a large bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, butter, and milk until you get a soft and smooth dough.
Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for 1 hour.
On a floured surface, roll out the dough to a thickness of about 5 mm.
Cut the dough into long, narrow strips, then gently braid them and seal the ends.
Fry the koeksisters in hot oil until golden brown, then transfer them to paper towels to remove excess oil.
Prepare the syrup by bringing the sugar, water, and lemon juice to a boil, then let it simmer for 5-8 minutes.
Dip the koeksisters in the hot syrup for a few minutes, then transfer them to a rack to cool.
Once cooled, you can enjoy your koeksisters warm or cold.

For the best result, let the koeksisters rest in the syrup for at least 4-6 hours before serving. Additionally, it is recommended to enjoy them while still warm.
