To emphasize its origin, the dialectal name of this grape variety has been used. The Renaissance agronomist Agostino Gallo, in a 16th-century writing, noted that the Monte Netto area was particularly suited for the cultivation of Marzemino grapes. In 2001, research with the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Milan brought to light the local biotypes of Marzemino from Monte Netto.
