Toscana Rosso IGT Castello di Fonterutoli Siepi Marchesi Mazzei (2017)
Siepi Marchesi Mazzei, the Toscana Siepi of Mazzei, is born in the Castello di Fonterutoli estate, located in the province of Siena, on the hills overlooking the Val d'Elsa, in the heart of Chianti Classico. It is produced with Sangiovese and Merlot grapes in equal parts, cultivated in the 6 hectares of Siepi, the best vineyard of the estate. The Merlot grapes are hand-harvested at the beginning of September, while the Sangiovese grapes are harvested at the end of the month. The Merlot undergoes maceration and fermentation for a period of 14 days, the Sangiovese for 16 days, both at a controlled temperature of 28-30°C. Subsequently, the wine is aged in oak barrels, 70% new, for 16-18 months before being bottled. It is a monumental wine, described by Gambero Rosso as "one of the 50 wines that changed Italy." On the nose, it opens with rich aromas of dark chocolate, while on the palate it is very well-structured, with a complex and extraordinarily long aftertaste. Ideal for accompanying rich and structured dishes, it pairs very well with stews and game. Perfect with blue cheeses, such as Gorgonzola and Roquefort.
