Modica chocolate has ancient origins and finds its roots in the Aztec people, who ruled in Central and South America from the 13th to the 16th century. Among the cultures and traditions of this ancient Mexican people, cocoa played an important role: it was considered nourishing food, economic support, and a symbol of a good social position. Also used for its benefits and healing properties, it had a mystical meaning and was considered a means to communicate with the deities. The Aztecs used cocoa beans to make a drink called xocoatl, which they flavored with local spices and herbs. It took the intervention of another people for this technique of processing cocoa beans to reach Modica from distant Mexico: the Spanish domination, common to the territory of present-day Mexico and Sicily, brought this method to Modica. It was the Spaniards who introduced sugar into the processing of cocoa beans. Even today, Modica chocolate is produced according to the ancient recipe. Ciomod. Ciomod, producer of our Modica IGP Chocolate Orange Peel, was founded in Modica in 2003 from a project by Innocenzo Pluchino. As the Sicilian tradition suggests, we are proud of our territory and we chose to "not leave", but to contribute to making it known. We are convinced of living in a magical place and, using the "best ingredients", such as respect for history and meticulous research of raw materials, we strive to present the territory to an audience that can appreciate its essence. From the start, the clear idea was to harmoniously combine the tradition of processing with the innovation of packaging. Creating innovative, appealing, fashionable, and design packaging while connecting it to Sicilian traditionalism: this is, and continues to be, the challenge of Ciomod. After creating the first line of Modica chocolate, we also dedicated ourselves to creating a liquid alternative: thus our first chocolate liqueur was born. Our distillery is a small factory in continuous growth that gives absolute attention to quality. The finished product is the result of careful selection of the raw materials from Sicily. The Modica Chocolate liqueur was the first specialty we offer: afterwards, various types of liqueur were created, such as almond, pistachio, fennel, cinnamon, and carob liqueurs. The bottle, label, and ribbon that complete the packaging were carefully chosen to present a product that is of quality and aesthetically simple and elegant. After ten years of activity, the commitment to constructive and constant growth has not diminished. In recent years, Ciomod has chosen to invest in expanding the product range and especially in representing the Sicilian territory through new channels, such as hospitality and reception. We believe that before selling a product, we sell our way of being and knowing how to welcome.
