De Ranke is one of those breweries that love to experiment and break down the barriers between styles, certainly one of the first to have done so in a land with a great brewing tradition like Belgium. Simplex is a clear example of this attitude of master brewers Nino Bacelle and Guido Devos, who manage, while staying true to top fermentation, to give this beer the drinkability and many other characteristics of a lager. We have classified it as Belgian Ale out of necessity, but compared to the other companions in the category, it is definitely less fruity (no banana, pear, etc.) and simultaneously more herbal and "pilsner-like."
